Western Branch Farm
Western Branch Farm is a 100 acre farm of forest and pasture, near Bridgewater in Nova Scotia.
The farm is growing 15 acres of the latest superfood berry - the haskap.
The soil and growing conditions are perfect high on the drumlins of South Western Nova Scotia for this exciting new superfood to flourish!
The haskap, a member of the honeysuckle family, was first introduced to Canada around 1967, and is sometimes known as ‘edible blue honeysuckle’, ‘Honeyberry’, ‘sweetberry’ and ‘haskap’.
The berry is grown on the island of Hokkaido, Japan, and was named ‘hasukappu’ by the indigenous Ainu.Haskap are high in anthocyanins, vitamin C, phenolic compounds and other antioxidants.
Well what a 3 years it has been ... having not been able to get out from the UK to the farm since the end of 2019, We are just thrilled to be able to be here again this summer.
The pandemic has certainly made global travel much harder, but it has also made us appreciate our little piece of Nova Scotia so much more!
The plants have grown, and so has the grass, but we are gradually uncovering them and have picked a good amount of berries for ourselves.
This is definitely not where we thought we would be in 2022, but we move on and roll with the punches right?
